CURRENT CLOUD CONNECTION OPTIONS AVAILABLE FOR SD-WAN NETWORK DESIGN

SD-WAN facilitates hosted Cloud application access direct from each local branch without the need to route traffic back through a central hub or Data Centre. The current trend is for SD-WAN suppliers to partner with leading IaaS and SaaS providers, and to make available virtual instances of their SD-WAN software in each cloud. Most SD-WAN platforms recognise traffic destined for Cloud providers using IP Addressing and automatically apply routing, compliance and security settings.

AWS permits 3rd party SD-WAN vendor software to run within customers Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) instances. Azure Virtual WAN service enables SD-WAN connections to Microsoft cloud networking services.

Let’s look at a few SD-WAN vendors and investigate their current Cloud strategy:

  1. Citrix: Integrated with MS Azure
  2. Cisco: Cloud Onramp is a setting on the cisco router that scores SaaS bound traffic & selects the best path to the SaaS provider. Cisco recently launched Colo-Bundling – offering colocation hosting facilities for customer’s SD-WAN instances so that their SD-WAN devices are situated closer to the Clouds in which their business applications are hosted.
  3. CloudGenix: Branch edge devices have application identification and autopath selection to access Cloud based apps – standard SD-WAN practice.
  4. Riverbed: offers one click VPNs to AWS and Azure.
  5. Oracle: Cloud Connect – Places multi-tenant instances of their software within individual partner ecosystems to deliver traffic closest to the Cloud applications. RingCentral and Mode are current live Cloud Connect partners. Virtual instances of Oracle Talari can be installed in AWS & Azure.
  6. Versa: facilitates virtual instances of their software within public and private clouds.
  7. Velocloud: Makes use of cloud gateways hosted in facilities globally to route traffic to the main IaaS providers. Establishing gateways closer to the main Cloud provider instances is on the VeloCloud 5-year roadmap (as of April 2019)

 

OUR OBSERVATIONS ON THE CURRENT SD-WAN CLOUD CONNECTION OPTIONS AVAILABLE

  1. Traditional SD-WAN customers using any private or 3rd party cloud provider, including Google, AWS, Microsoft Azure etc. will need to install, manage and pay for a separate virtual SD-WAN instance in every cloud provider accessed. Example: 3 Cloud environments = 3 additional SD-WAN instances.
  2. Most SD-WAN vendor solutions send traffic destined for IaaS or SaaS Cloud environments directly from the branch edge device. This traffic is usually sent over the public Internet and is not SD-WAN shaped or enhanced.
  3. Not all public clouds and providers are readily available, dependant on the SD-WAN provider. Oracle (Talari SD-WAN) currently has no plans to integrate with Google cloud, as an example.
  4. SD-WAN providers recognise the advantage of delivering traffic as close as possible to the public Clouds.
  5. Customers operate multiple systems and providers to control individual cloud application access.

These connections can also be automated and can be billed monthly or on a per usage / consumption basis, giving customers complete control over their Cloud application access.

  1.  International connectivity: A connection to SDWAN CLOUD facilitates connectivity to over 465 Data Centre locations globally, available on a pay as you use basis – you only pay for traffic when used.   2. Supports SD-WAN Multi-vendor solutions: Customers can seamlessly operate multiple SD-WAN vendors (Talari, Silver Peak and Velocloud) within a single solution. Different regions / departments or companies undergoing mergers can run different SD-WAN network solutions, share Cloud environments and communicate seamlessly via SDWAN CLOUD.
  3. Disaster recovery and Business continuity: Customers have full control over Cloud access and can switch to alternative cloud environments in under 60 seconds, all via an online portal.
  4. Storage and Backup: SDWAN Cloud can X-connect to dedicated storage and back-up facilities within the same environment, reducing latency and taking full advantage of SD-WAN traffic enhancements from every branch edge device to the back-up environment.
  5. Perimeter-As-A-Service: SDWAN CLOUD can include connection to Meta Networks PaaS to facilitate secure and compliant remote user connections directly into your private network
  6. Every aspect of the solution roll-out is project managed:  the SD-WAN hardware, software, onsite installations, connectivity orders and installs, man-in-a-van, engineering teams and all suppliers and vendors are carefully coordinated and managed by the SDWAN Solutions team.
